Abstract

Sexual health education remains an essential yet often overlooked component of comprehensive support for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. While sexual development is a normative aspect of human growth, barriers such as stigma, cultural sensitivities, and limited resources frequently prevent these individuals from receiving accurate and accessible education. This workshop explores an evidence-based, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive approach to sexual health education. Drawing from behavioral science, safeguarding principles, and lived experiences, the training addresses core domains of body awareness, boundaries, consent, relationships, online safety, and self-advocacy. Emphasis will be placed on strategies that foster autonomy and dignity while equipping families, educators, and practitioners with tools to bridge communication gaps and support informed, safe decision-making. Participants will also engage with practical resources, scripts, and teaching methods designed to promote generalization across environments. This session aims to reframe sexual health education as not only a protective factor against abuse but also a critical pathway toward empowerment, inclusion, and quality of life.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the unique challenges and needs of individuals with autism and developmental disabilities in accessing sexual health education.
  2. Explain how sexual health education functions as both a protective factor and an empowerment tool.
  3. Apply evidence-based teaching strategies, including visual supports, social stories, and role-play, to teach concepts such as consent, boundaries, and safe relationships.
  4. Adapt sexual health education to align with cultural values while maintaining accuracy and safeguarding principles.
